STUDENT SMOKING/USE OF TOBACCO

 

 

Student possession or use of any tobacco product, smokeless tobacco, or any smoking object/device, including but not limited to electronic cigarettes, advanced personal vaporizers, vape pens, vape mods and similar devices, shall be prohibited on and in all Franklin Parish School Board property and vehicles, and at all school-sponsored or school-approved functions.

 

School Board property shall include any elementary or secondary school grounds or buildings, any portable buildings, field houses, stadiums, equipment storage areas, vacant land, or any other property owned, operated, or leased by the School Board.

 

Parental permission to smoke, consume, or possess tobacco products does not exempt a student from this policy.

 

COMPLIANCE AND ENFORCEMENT

 

Violations shall subject the student to appropriate disciplinary action and the student may also be referred to cessation counseling services.

 

COMMUNICATION OF POLICY

 

Parents and students shall be informed of this policy through written notice, student handbooks, and policy manuals.

 

RECOMMENDED SCHOOL ACTION

 

Any student in grades 5-12 who is found guilty of possessing, using, or distributing tobacco product, smokeless tobacco, or any smoking object/devise, including but not limited to electronic cigarettes, advanced personal vaporizers, vape pens, vape mods, and similar devices on School Board property or during any school-approved function shall be subject to the following consequences for such a violation:

 

5th-8th Grade:

 

1st Offense:  Confiscate; Investigate reason for having item in possession; Invite parents in for conference; five (5) days In-School-Suspension

 

2nd Offense:  Confiscate; Invite parents in for conference; seven (7) days In-School-Suspension

 

3rd Offense:  Confiscate; Mandatory parent conference; five (5) days at the Horace G. White Learning Center (Alternative Program)

 

4th Offense:  Confiscate; 9 days at the Horace G. White Learning Center (Alternative Program)

 

9th-12th Grade:

 

1st  Offense:  Confiscate; Parental contact and five (5) days In School-Detention

 

2nd  Offense:  Confiscate; Parental contact and one (1) day Suspension

 

3rd Offense:  Confiscate; Parental contact and three (3) days Suspension

 

4th Offense:  Confiscate; Parental contact and recommendation for placement at the Horace G. White Learning Center (Alternative Program) for five (5) days
